Introduction Of WAG 12
Indian
Railways now have their most powerful new generation Alstom makes locomotive
WAG 12 B, 12000 H.P. start functioning towards the nation from 19th
May 2020. For more stayed with this article till the end.
Why It needed?
To meet the country's demand for increasing freight service, the Indian Railway takes a mega project to connect our nation from the Eastside to the west side and Northside to the Southside through railway tracks. Indian Railway gives its name Dedicated Freight Corridor. And it is also observed that presently working locomotives cannot reach the demand for speed of at least 100 kmph with a load of 6300 tonnes. Indian Railways research organization RDSO (Research Design & Standard Organisation) developed a new concept of 9000 KW or 12000 H.P. new generation locomotive WAG 12 B series.
These new three-phase WAG 12 electric locomotive can haul 6300 tonnages of load with a speed of 100 kmph which can be upgraded up to 120 kmph. It will be the most powerful locomotive of the Indian Railway. The wheels arrangements are twin BO-BO type total of eight axles. The axles load increased to 22.5 t to meet the hauling capacity of 12000 H.P. Total design has done by the RDSO.
Arrangement of Production
To achieve the whole project Indian Railway bid a global tender. As per the largest Foreign Direct Investment of Indian Railways Ministry of Railways had signed a contract of 3.5 billion dollars or in Indian money 25000 crores with M/s Alstom as a joint venture to manufacture this new WAG 12, 12000 H.P. locomotives.
As per
contract total, 800 double sections BO-Bo 12000 H.P. three-phase IGBT (Insulated gate bipolar transistor) control electric
will manufactured as supplies to the Indian railway in the next 11 years. In
this contract, it is also included that a new manufacturing unit will set-up at
Madhepura (Bihar), and also two maintenance depots will set-up at Saharanpur (U.P.)
and Nagpur (Maharastra). The total maintenance will also do by the Alstom for
the next 11 years.
At
last, the most waited time come. On 19th May 2020 The first WAG 12
B, 12000 H.P. the most powerful locomotive of Indian Railways put into
commercial service. At MGS ( Mughalsarai) a freight train worked with this
Locomotive. These locomotives allocated a block number starting from 60000 and
onwards.
There
are two variants available of WAG 12. They are WAG 12 A and WAG 12 B. The first model WAG12A meets some issues
regarding riding quality. Only one unit has been manufactured of this variant.
Then WAG 12 B comes with the modification of a new suspension system and
bogies. The WAG 12 B series started from 63000 and onwards.
Technical Specifications of WAG 12 B.
Axle BO-BO means 08 (Eight) numbers of axles mounted with eight numbers of Asynchronous, Nose Suspended resulting in the output of 9000 KW or 12069 H.P. (approx). The weight of locomotive is 180 Tons which can be upgraded up to 200 Tons as per requirements. Total buffer to buffer length is 38400 mm, 19200 mm per unit lengthiest locomotive of Indian Railways and can travel at a speed 100 kmph upgradeable to 120 kmph the highest speed for freight trains in Indian Railways with the load of 6,300 tons, 1:150 Gradient, 60 kmph for 25 Ton Per Axle.
Every unit has its pantograph but only one pantograph can rise at a time
unlike the multiple units of locomotives where both locomotive pantographs
raise at the same time. But both the units controlled from driving a cab
Both units will be controlled from the working cab but connected through
vestibule so that the loco pilot can check the other unit without getting down
from loco or running condition if needed.
An important technical change is that all the types of equipment like DJ (Vacuum Circuit Barker)and its linked pieces of equipment are now removed from the locomotive roof of this WAG 12 and loco roof almost empty except pantograph. All these apparatus now placed within locomotive in a special cubical.
Other Technical specifications.
This loco coming with a new braking feature called “Brake Blending”. At
the time of regenerative braking if it found not sufficient to stop the train
within limit then loco will apply its pneumatic brake automatically to stop the
train within the limit. Previously loco pilots have to apply the pneumatic
brakes by himself. This modification now also applies to modern EMU rakes.
Its previous version WAG 9 and other three phases locomotive have a
problem of insufficient air at the driving cabin. Its new design ensures that
sufficient air will pass through the loco pilot cabin.
The best part is that this WAG 12, 12000 H.P. locomotive comes with
toilet facility for the loco pilot. We all welcome the WAG12 , 12000 H.P. locomotive
for future of Indian Railways.
My views on WAG 12 12000 H.P. Locomotives.
These WAG 12. 12000 H.P. threes phases electric locomotives will prove as the very effective tool for the future prosperity of indian Railways.
